Kauai: Puka Dog, Spouting Horn, and Poipu Beach
Good morning! I am sitting here in Kauai, sipping on some coffee and loving the sunshine.
The rest of yesterday was pretty full. After yesterdays workout, shower, and breakfast we climbed into the car and drove about 20 minutes to a local farmers market. We were advised to get there early because they get picked clean pretty fast. We were on the look out for some vegetables to roast for dinner as well as fruit for fruit salad.
The market itself was pretty small but there was an over abundance of fresh, locally grown produce. In 30 minutes we had arm loads of sweet potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini, lychees, grapefruit, beets, mangoes, papayas, carrots, beans, and a few fruits we didn’t even know what they were.
After the farmers market, we headed south to Poipu.
This is actually my second time being to Kauai — the first time I was here, Joe brought me here in 2011 and that is when he popped the question! It’s been pretty neat being back here.
When Joe and I were here in 2011, we stumbled across Puka Dog:
It was an instant favorite for us (pretty sure we ate there at least 3 times) so I made sure that it was on the agenda for this trip.
Essentially it is a fancy, “island style” hot dog — the breading is really soft and slightly sweet and you have a choice of traditional toppings (ketchup and mustard) or the island toppings which include mango relish, pineapple relish, and coconut relish – to name a few. They also have a variety of garlic-lemon sauces that are so so good!
The last time I was here, I got adventurous and tried one of the fruity relishes. This time, though, I went traditional with a polish sausage, garlic-lemon sauce, and ketchup and mustard. It was even better than I remembered:
After Puka Dog we did a quick stop at Spouting Horn:
We can only assume that the tide was out when we were there but it was still pretty neat to see.
Upon leaving Spouting Horn, we hit Poipu Beach where we soaked up the sun for about an hour. Oh it was delightful!
Dinner — May 6, 2013
For dinner last night, we grilled some chicken breasts and eggplant and roasted a bunch of the veggies we scored at the farmers market:
Just because we are on vacation doesn’t mean we don’t eat healthy!
I am being told that we are going to be heading out soon so I will write another post tonight about my workout this morning as well as some of the new fruits that we tried for breakfast this morning.
Have a good day!
