Dinner — April 16, 2013

Several nights a week, I am coaching until 8pm so I am always grateful when I get home and find dinner ready and waiting for me.  Last night was, thankfully, one of those nights:

This is one of Joe’s recent specialties and I swear this is so much tastier (and possibly healthier) than any orange chicken you will find at a restaurant.  And I  appreciated that he obliged with my request of brown rice over white rice!

Due to the rice and all the veggies, I didn’t have to eat a ton just to feel full – so that’s a win.  Yesterday was a good food day for me and lately, I have been learning that it is ok to be hungry throughout the day — as long as I eat at my regular times and am conscious of portions, I am not going to over do it and I most certainly aren’t going to starve!  I have also been noticing these last few weeks, that when I do wait out the hunger pangs they eventually go away making me wonder if I really was hungry in the first place.  This body and this mind are always trying to play tricks on me!

Workout — April 17, 2013

This weeks workouts have been pretty tough for me to get through.  I have been feeling exhausted and worn out so I knew that today I needed to take it easy.  I was at the gym by 6:45am where I started off with 5 minutes of walking to warm up on the treadmill.  Once the blood was flowing and the legs were awake, I ran 2.62 miles in honor of those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings:

When events such as these happen, all my normal TV watching goes out the window and I am glued to the news hanging on every last bit of breaking information.  While running this 2.62 miles, I found myself flipping back and forth between news channels — when one would go to commercial break, I would hop on over to another one not wanting to miss anything.

I ran this 2.62 miles in honor and remembrance of those affected by Monday’s events — the same events I haven’t been able to tear myself away from.  Somewhat fitting?  I don’t know if that is the right way to put it.  I guess sometimes I feel as if when tragedy strikes, we tend to make a spectacle of the days surrounding such sad happenings.  And I know that I am 100% guilty of this — my strict attention to all things Boston related puts me right in the midst of that spectacle.

If it makes any difference, I have nothing but sympathy and hope for all those affected and by watching all the breaking news I am in no way glorifying the events, rather trying (like the rest of us) to understand.

Anyways, back to today’s workout.

The rest of my workout was spent doing a walk/run treadmill interval.  Here is how it went:

If I had more time, I would have done this workout 2 times in order to get a 60 minute cardio workout, but alas, time was not on my side today.  I like this workout because I doesn’t leave me dying by the time I am done but I still know that I am getting a great workout in.

After Workout Snack:

I rushed home for a snack and a shower before I had to leave again.  For a snack, I cut up 1 banana and about 4 or 5 strawberries:

Gotta love fresh fruit!  One of the downsides of living in Alaska, is that we often get fruit that is picked long before it has ripened which leads to fruits that are sort of bland.  I got lucky with these strawberries because they were sweet, tart, and delicious!!

Well, that about wraps up my morning and afternoon.  I have a paleo meal cooking away in the crock pot for dinner and now I am running out the door and headed off for several hours of coaching.

Here I go!!
