October 3, 2012

So the following may be a little graphic for some of you — if you are adverse to talk about sickness and bodily functions, I suggest you skip ahead to where is says “workout.”  Don’t say I didn’t warn you….

So I failed to tell you all that I woke up crazy early yesterday morning drowning in mucus.  Ugh, even the word makes me gag.

Usually I can feel a cold/flu coming on a few days before it settles in and wreaks havoc but not this time — this time it snuck up on me and beat me into oblivion.

As yesterday progressed, this flu continued to get worse and along with it came the body aches, chills, hacking cough, sneezing, oozing from every orifice in my head and mouth breathing.

Yes, mouth breathing — my IQ dropped several points I am certain.

So far the worst part of this flu is how much my lungs hurt just to breathe.  That just ain’t right!

And when I can’t breathe through my nose I can not, for the life of me, sleep through the night.  It was a long night of upright sleeping on the recliner.  So lame.

Workout 10/2/2012

I woke up in the recliner early this morning with very little sleep under my belt.  It would have been so simple to throw in the towel and not go to the gym, but I have made a daily commitment and I plan on sticking to it.

I dragged my congested and achy body to the gym with a modified workout in mind.

My lungs were still pretty painful so I figured running and intervals were out.  I decided 30 minutes of incline walking was the way to go — it would still get my heart rate up but wouldn’t be too terrible on the lungs.  Here is what I did:

As you can see my pace stayed the same but I varied the pace every 5 minutes.  I certainly wasn’t drenched in sweat by the time I was done but it was still something.

I forgot to do pull ups today but I am almost certain they would have been terrible anyways — I was definitely not at my best today.

I then moved on to this low-key AMRAP circuit:

I purposely didn’t do anything that had me jumping around a lot — that’s those lungs holding me back again.

After this was done I did some stretching as well as spent some time with a torture device sent from Hades the foam roller to work out some serious kinks in my hips and lower back.

So would I have rather slept in and skipped the gym today?  Yes.

Did I feel better once my heart was pumping and my head was a little clearer?  Yes.

Do I regret going to the gym when I was horrendously under the weather?  Not for one second.
